Celebrate your family’s participation in the stand for the liberty of conscience of all people living in Flushing in 1657. For more information about the Flushing Remonstrance. For further reading about the Flushing Remonstrance, historic Flushing, colonial New York or the Bowne Family, see our Bibliography .

The Queens Library at Flushing will exhibit the only known copy of The Flushing Remonstrance (1657) December 5, 2007 through January 7, 2008 thanks to the
New York State Archives.

Get acquainted with other descendants, exchange family information! You haven’t seen each other in centuries! You’ll also have a chance to meet some of Flushing ’s local business and civic leaders. This event is graciously hosted by the Sheraton LaGuardia East and the Flushing BID.

The Quaker Meeting House Tour

Visit the oldest Quaker Meeting House which was built in 1694 with the help of John Bowne and friends. For 30 years prior to its being erected, Quaker meetings were held at historic Bowne House every Sunday.

The distinguished guest speaker will be Professor Tabetha Garman of East Tennessee University. She is the author of "Designed For the Good of All: The Flushing Remonstrance and Religious Freedom in America" (2006), an outstanding treatise on the Flushing Remonstrance.

We will walk over to the Quaker Meeting House after the Descendants Lunchtime Gathering.

Take a guided tour of the Long Island Ro om. Space is limited to 8 people per tour. Please sign up as soon as possible!

If you are not able to be a part of the tour, you may still want to take a visit. With primary source material dating from the 17th century, the Long Island Ro om is a must for anyone researching their Long Island roots. Since 1912, it has collected, preserved, and made available a myriad of resources that document the social, economic, and political history of the four counties on Long Island - Kings ( Brooklyn ), Queens , Nassau , and Suffolk .

Another favorite, essential resource is the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. Go to www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org for further details.
