Date & Time: Saturday, September 28th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Location: Bowne House at 37-01 Bowne Street, Flushing, NY 11354
Program Description: To mark National Underground Railroad Month, the Bowne House Archives offers the most in-depth look yet at our "Underground Railroad Letter," which was carried to Flushing 175 years ago this month by a freedom-seeker on the Underground Railroad. Archivist Charlotte Jackson will showcase this rare surviving document that connects Bowne House and the Flushing community to a multiracial network of abolitionists and the aspirations of those who self-emancipated from slavery. We will share our most recent findings about the historical context of the letter, the biographies of the Bowne House residents who may have assisted, and our evolving map of potential Underground Railroad routes in the area of Flushing. A question-and-answer period will follow. Attendees will be given a tour of Bowne House before the start of the presentation.
Admission: $10 per Attendee; $5 for Members.
(Tickets are purchased at the door.)
